Dr. NGUYEN DAI MINH, Dr. VU THANH TRUNG

This paper presents the lessons and experiences of Phillipines in responses during super-typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and proposes typhoon resistance solutions for houses and low-rise buildings in Vietnam.

Analysis of dynamic behavior the structure of railway track without ballast by single-degree-of-freedom systems and two-degree-of-freedom systems (pp.10-18)

MEng. NGUYEN XUAN DAI

The study of railway track dynamic behavior under loads of vehicle is very important in the railway track construction. The Low Vibration Track (LVT) system which was developed by Roger and Bernard Sonneville, is considered an effective solution for all types of slab tracks. It has been applied successfully in the railway track construction in tunnels. This paper presents the application and study on modelling the system of LVT under the loads of vehicle in order to analysing the dynamic behavior of structure and researching the effects of the vehicle's velocity and vehicle's loading on this system.

The behavior of concrete piles in river embankment structures in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City (pp.19-27)

Dr. NGUYEN MINH TAM, Eng. HAN THI XUAN HAO

During construction of sand river bank which is supported by concrete wall system combined with reinforced concrete piles, the foundation soil may become unstable due to the load of sand fill, construction loads and other factors, and lateral displacement and internal forces in piles will be negatively affected. If displacements and internal forces in the pile exceeds the allowable limits, the piles will be failed. The content of this paper concentrates on the modelling of the behavior of piles under river bank embankment structures in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City. Based on monitoring data from the breakdown of structures and geological characteristics of the study area, the authors carried out back analysis of problem by using Plaxis program to find out a suitable solution of river embankment in District 2, Ho Chi Minh City.

Calculation of shallow shells of two-dimensional positive curve, rectangular in plan, supported in four corners by successive approximation method (SAM) (pp.28-33)

Dr. NGUYEN HIEP DONG

Nowaday, the application of numerical methods to calculate the constructions is increasingly popular and diverse. There are different methods such as finite element method (FEM), finite difference method (FDM), successive approximation method (SAM), etc. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, but FEM is the most common method. This paper introduced SAM method that was developed on the basis of finite difference method and its application in calculating the shallow shells of two-dimensional curve, rectangular in plan, under a uniformly distributed load. The advantage of the method XXLT is: relatively simple algorithms; no need to set up the stiffness matrix calculation, so the calculation does not require much memory in computer; the accuracy of results of calculation is reliable; especially, the method can be applied for different boundary conditions with different loads, including concentrated loads [1, 3, 5].

Study on effects of iron oxide Fe203 to the formation of mineral in white stone cement with metakaolin (pp.34-41)

MEng. NGUYEN GIA NGOC, Dr. TRAN BA VIET

In this paper, the authors pointed out when the oxide Fe2O3 is present in the morter of white cement containing Metakaolin, except the additional component glassy phase to form two minerals mentioned above, the substitution Fe 3+by Al3+ was also found. This was shown by studying the structure through chemical and physical analytical methods such as Xray (XRD), SEM / EDX, IR spectrum and Raman spectroscopy.

Testing and identification of fracture parameters of high-strength concrete (pp.42-48)

Eng. NGUYEN THANH VU, A/Prof. Dr.. BUI CONG THANH, Dr. HO HUU CHINH, Dr. TRAN THE TRUYEN

This paper presents the testing and identification process of principal fracture parameters of high-strength concretes. Critical stress intensity factors KC, critical fracture toughness GC, fracture energy Gf  and characteristic lengths of fracture process zone (FPZ) lch of  two types of concrete with the compression resistance varying from 60 MPa to 80 MPa being collected and treated from the experiment of three-points bending notched beams. Conclusions about the fracture testing method according to Vietnamese conditions and proposes the solution to obtain in complete and accurate way of experimental results.

EAF steel slag as supplementary cementing material (pp.49-56)

Eng. NGUYEN PHUOC VINH, MEng. LE THI DUY HANH, MEng. HUYNH NGOC MINH, MEng. LE MINH SON, MEng. NGUYEN THAI HOA, Dr. NGUYEN KHANH SON

This paper presents the results of investigation on recycling of steel slag as a cementitious additive to cement mortar and/or concrete. As the material component of steel slag is highly variable, EAF slag material are gathered from plant sites Dong Tien, Ba Ria-Vung Tau. Chemical compositions of slag consist almost the high content of free CaO (>31%), MgO (>7%), FeO (>35-50%) and iron. Lower content of cementitious minerals C3S and C2S endorses relative low hydraulic reactivity in comparison with Portland cement. Pozzolanic reactivity of steel slag is moderate according to standard range. After reducing particle size to 90μm (Blaine 3400 cm2/g), cement was mixed with  steel slag containing 10% to 40% of slag by mass. Two blending systems: steel slag-cement Portland; steel slag-granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS)-Portland cement were introduced. Both early age and later age properties of mortar samples were analyzed. Preliminary results showed that a content of 20% of slag in blended cement was suitable for required strength and anti-corrosion properties. On the other hand, mixed sample 20% steel slag and 20% GBFS could be considered in practical application. The durability property of samples is considered satisfactory in severe condition of high sulfate and acidity. To improve hydraulic reactivity of steel slag by heat treatment at molten state, the mineralogy of cement slag is discussed. The purpose of new clinker type of cement slag could be a perspective for further studies.

This paper presents the analyses of the influence of helices diameter, helices spacing and strength of soil-cement column in order to find out the relationship between them. Based on the relationship, some basic parameters of ATT pile are selected for the preliminary design calculations.

Discussion on design and estimating accuracy of GPS network in engineering survey (pp.63-70)

Eng. BUI HUU TUAN

This paper presents solutions relating to design and accuracy estimation of GPS control network in engineering survey. On this base, a computer programme has been developed by the author. This program was used for estimation of accuracy for specific networks. The result of estimation of accuracy by the programme was in good agreement with results from strict post-processing accuracy estimation by least square principle.
