ABSTRACT
Experimental study on half-precast concrete connection under the action of seismic loading (part 1) (pp. 3-10)
A/Prof. Dr. Tran Chung, A/Prof. Dr. Vo Van Thao, Dr. Le Minh Long, Dr. Do Tien Thinh, Eng. Tran Ngoc Cuong, Eng. Ngo Manh Toan
From 2009 to 2011, researchers from Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology (IBST) have been conducted an experimental study to investigate the mutual affect of connections used in half-precast concrete structure that being developed in Vietnam under the action of seismic loading. Because the content of this study is quite large as well as the limit of this Journal, this study will be published in three issues (1/2012, 2/2012, 3/2012).  In the first issue, selection and design of test specimen and loading system is presented. Following issues will present about construction and setting up of test specimen, instrumentation system, loading history, and test results.
Evaluation of resistant factor corresponding to some methods of prediction of pile bearing capacity of the standard TCXD 205 : 1998 (pp. 11-15)
Dr. Trinh Viet Cuong
The formulas for estimation of axial pile bearing capacity in AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and the corresponding resistance factors were established basing on the soil conditions in the United States. Results from application of those formulas for piles in Vietnam soil conditions have shown a considerable difference between the calculated bearing capacity and the results from static loading tests. An adequate measure of improving the reliability of estimation of pile bearing capacity might be the utilization of calculation methods that have been verified for decades in Vietnam conditions.
This report presents the preliminary results on the determination of resistant factor corresponding to some methods of estimation of pile bearing capacity in Vietnam Specifications for pile design TCXD 205:1998.

Evaluation of concrete strength based on concrete grades and marks (mean strength of concrete) (pp. 16-21)
Dr. Nguyen Dai Minh
Concrete grade (B) introduced in the Vietnamese present concrete and reinforced concrete design standard TCXDVN 356:2005 is the interim step to replace the concrte mark (M). The relation between B and M is specified in this standard by the strength variation parameter n, conventionally n=0.135. The difference between B and M is about 10 MPa depending on the concrete grade, and the concrete strength evaluation is currently still based on concrete mark M. Most engineers and experts have agrreed that the strength evaluation based on concrete mark can be acceptable. However, few have said that this evaluation may be conservative and waste money because TCXDVN 356:2005 have been and are applied for mostly all projects in Vietnam. Furthermore, the evaluation based on concrete M may prevent the innovation/improving the construction technology to reduce the cost and increase the quality of concrete. Therefore, this paper shall clarify and make the confirmation that the concrete strength evaluation when the structures are designed based on TCXDVN 356:2005 shall temporarily be based on the concrete mark except that the Designer special specifictions. The paper will also present the differences between the evaluations based on the Vietnamese standard, BS 8110 and Eurocode 8 in which these codes have the same concept that at least 95% of all the test samples greater than the concrte grade similar to that of the Vietnamese code.
Some research results about curtain walls of high-rise buildings (pp. 22-29)
Dr. Vu Thanh Trung
In recent years, the curtain walls are applied popularly for high-rise buildings in Vietnam. They are are a very expensive component of the building costing up to 20% of the overall cost of the buildings initial cost. The consequences of a improper designed are serious. This paper presents some research results about curtain walls of high-rise buildings.
Assessment of the reliability and technical conditions of building structures under the signs of surface (pp. 30-33)
A/Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Chinh, Eng. Le Chi Hieu
In some articles from this issue will in turn present a rapid assessment method of reliability of the construction works on the basis of existing signs damaged, and predicted probability of occurrence of process.
The modified clay mortar against water decay (pp. 34-40)
Eng. Phan Cong Phuong, Dr. Tran Minh Duc
CCK as an aditive, used for modification of clay mortar may reduce mortar’s disaggregation in water. So as very important to make clear, how CCK influences on physico-mechanical specifications of clay mortar. The problem is resolved and presented in this paper.
The effect of Pha Lai thermoelectric fly ash on  the strength of mortar when replacing from 30% -70% by volume (pp. 41- 43)
MEng. Phan Van Chuong
This paper deals  with  research rusult The effect of Pha Lai thermoelectric fly ash on  the strength of mortar when replacing from 30% -70% by volume.
The fire hazard characteristics of building materials - defined in some system of fire safety standards for home and work (pp. 44- 49)
MEng. Hoang Anh Giang
The article introduces prevailing method for classification of reaction to fire properties of building materials and products that is applied in the standards for fire safety of Vietnam and  those of other countries or territories. Relevant standards and the principles of testing method for determining reaction to fire properties of builiding materials are listed and outlined as well.
Adiabatic temperature rise and reaction rate of mass structure in lotte center hanoi project (pp. 50- 56)
Dr. Kim  Kwang Ki, Eng. Hwang In Gwan, Eng. Kim Myoung Gug
It is necessary for concrete structure with mass section to have a rational crack control plan based on analysis of thermal stress from hydration heat. Because mass concrete can cause crack to deteriorate durability of structure. So, this study reports two examples: one is a process to calculate an adiabatic temperature rise and a reaction rate for evaluate thermal stress. And the other is how to control quality of mass concrete with reducing internal restraining stress through finite analysis.
As a result, a thermal crack index is over 1.0 and a curing time of mass-section foundation decreases within 18 days through minimizing binders in concrete and adjusting hydration heat and delay setting time between the former and the latter placed concrete.

Evaluating the pointing capability in tunnel construction by the method of back-to-back tunneling (pp. 57-60)
Eng. Diem Cong Huy
Surveying works play an important role in tunnel construction process. One of the Task of the surveying works is to ensure the construction of the tunnel in accordance to design drawing. This paper presents a test method which concludes pointing capability of tunnel and gives promptly recommendations to keep investor as well as construction organization from some serious errors, economic losses and slow progress in the works of construction.
