ABSTRACT

Completion of the refurbishment, restoration and embellishment project of Thien Mu pagoda monument in Thua Thien-Hue province
(pp.3- 7)

Dr. Tran Minh Duc
Thien Mu Pagoda (also called Linh Mu Pagoda) locates on Ha Khe hill, An Ninh Thuong village, Kim Long ward, Hue city, Thua Thien Hue Province. As shown in historical documents, Thien Mu Pagoda dated from the middle of XVI century, but it really became a big pagoda since Nguyen Hoang had it rebuilt in 1601. From then on, it was considered as a national pagoda of Southern Vietnam.
This paper present the results obtained from the refurbishment, restoration and embellishment project of Thien Mu pagoda monument. The construction items of the Thien Mu pagoda monument well restored and refurbished are: Dai Hung, Dia Tang and Quan Am temples; Phuoc Duyen tower, the Yard, the Chuong (bell) and Trong (drum) pavilions, the Triple gate; the Front hexagonal and Quadrilateral pavilions; the Pillars and Pattenrned banisters; the Embankment, cross-wall and rampart; and the infrastructural technical systems.
The completion of restoration and refurbishment of Thien mu pagoda - the most beautiful ancient religious monument in Hue city existing for more than 400 years has shown the special attention of the Vietnam State to the freedom of religious beliefs of the people living in Thua-Thien Hue in particular and Vietnamese people in general.

Simulation of Tropical Cyclone Winds for Coastline Regions in Vietnam - Haiphong Case Study (pp.8- 17)

MEng
. Le Truong Giang, Prof. Yukio Tamura
,
A/Prof. Masahiro Matsui
This paper presents an extensive Monte-Carlo simulation of Tropical cyclone winds for Phulien /Haiphong meteorological station. A Tropical cyclone model was developed for this station.  The results shown that wind speeds stipulated by Vietnamese wind loading code (revised in 2006) for northern coastal areas, probably were overestimated of about 17% to 27%.  Further, the use of distributions to represent tropical cyclone parameters in simulation procedure with focusing on the central pressure difference was discussed.

Analysis of steel frames with semi-rigid connections according to elasto-plastic models
(pp.18- 23)

MEng
. Nguyen Quoc Hung

A/Prof. Dr.
Nguyen Tien Chuong
In this paper, the authors present the way to solve the problem of analyzing steel frames with nonlinear semi-rigid connections according to elasto-plastic models. Some cases in which steel frames subjected to loads with commonly-seen loading and unloading rules are analyzed. The analyzing result shows that when the nonlinear semi-rigid connections exceed the elastic limitation, there are specific characteristics in the behaviour of the structure subjected to variable loads, particularly the behaviour of connections, the accumulation of residual strain and stress in the structure after the loading and unloading cycle, or being subjected to cycle loads.

Internal equivalent nodal forces of the plane strain rectangular elements in the nonlinear finite element problem (pp.24- 26)

MEng.
Nguyen Dai Vien
The convergence check is an important step of every nonlinear analysis algorithm. Convergence criterion may be any combination of out-of-balance forces, change in displacements. Criterion based on out-of-balance force is used after yielding because displacement is very high after yielding. Hence, the internal nodal forces are required to be determined.
In this paper, the author presents the determination of the internal nodal forces of plane strain rectangular elements.

Introduction of the models for determining damage to structures subjected to an earthquakes
(pp.27- 31)

Dr.
Nguyen Van Bac
The damage model in a form of displacement defined in most seismic codes is rather inadequate since it is implicitly assumed that the structural damage occurs only due to maximum displacements. This fallacy was discussed and demonstrated by a numerical example taken from a published literature. Therefore, damage models which include the energy dissipation during inelastic responses of structures have been considered in seismic design. In this paper, the Park-Ang damage model was introduced and then applied to determine the damage in a reinforced concrete bridge pier, which was subjected to an earthquake-induced ground motion.

The analysis of the stress-strain state around the deep excavation according to its variable dimensions
(pp.32- 36)

Dr.
Nguyen Viet Tuan
The analysis of the stress-strain state around the deep excavation is influenced by several factors such as the soil profile, ground water, soil properties, shape of the excavation, supporting structures, etc.. The analysis and calculation done in this paper have shown that the variation of the stress-strain state of the soil around the deep excavation depends on the geometrical characteristics of the excavation. Comparison of the analyzing results with the actual monitoring ones at some construction sites are also presented in this paper.

The influence of some polycabosilate-based superplasticizers on the properties of 30MPa self-leveling mortars
(pp.37- 42)

Dr.
Tran Ba Viet
,
Eng. Nguyen Thanh Truc
Pumping and grouting mortars with high strengths of  50, 60 and 70 MPa have been studied and produced by well-known firms such as: Sika, MBT (Switzerland). Non-shrink self-leveling  mortars high strengths of  50, 60 and 70 MPa have also been produced by Buma (England), Grace (USA). However, there have been very few studies  on low strength non-shrink self-leveling  mortars.
In this paper, the authors present a study on production of low strength non-shrink self-leveling  mortars (30MPa) by determining the influence of some polycabosilate-based superplasticizers on the properties of  30MPa self-leveling mortar being produced with the materials available in Vietnam in the study.

Some matters on concrete strength
(pp.43- 46)

Dr.
Le Minh long

This paper presents some matters on concrete strength as well as the application of concrete strength to the analysis and calculation of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. Concrete strength depends on various factors such as: production technology, dimensions and shape of the mould, setting condition and time, working state, loading characteristic and  its acting time (short-term or long-term), the processes of transportation, placement and compaction of concrete...The actual concrete strength may be lesser than the relevant standard one and, concrete strength on existing structures may different from that of the relevant sample. In addition, concrete strength is neither identical on the same section nor the same along the structural length.
